Scroll through any wellness feed long enough and you'll run into it: the estrogen detox. A fancy tea, a 30-day protocol, maybe a pricey supplement stack with a name that sounds vaguely scientific. The promise is always the same — flush out excess estrogen, balance your hormones, feel like a new person.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: most of these products are trading on a real biological process while delivering very little of what your body actually needs. The liver does metabolize estrogen. That part isn't a myth. But the way it does it — and what it needs to do it well — is a lot more specific than any 'detox' tea is going to tell you.
Let's break it down properly.
What Hormone Detox Actually Means (Biologically Speaking)
Your liver processes estrogen through two main stages, commonly called Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification. Think of Phase 1 as the preparation step and Phase 2 as the packaging and disposal step.

If Phase 1 is the prep kitchen, Phase 2 is the whole restaurant. It's more complex, more nutrient-dependent, and far more likely to be the bottleneck.
Methylation is one of the most talked-about Phase 2 pathways, and for good reason. It requires folate (specifically in its active 5-MTHF form), B12, and B6. People with MTHFR gene variants — a surprisingly large chunk of the population — often have reduced methylation capacity, which can slow estrogen clearance. Getting methylated B vitamins rather than synthetic folic acid makes a meaningful difference for this group.
Glucuronidation is another major Phase 2 pathway for estrogen. This one depends on adequate glycine and UDP-glucuronic acid. Here's where a popular supplement earns its reputation: calcium-d-glucarate. It inhibits an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase, which can break the glucuronidation bond and allow estrogen to get reabsorbed in the gut. The research on calcium-d-glucarate isn't enormous, but it's more substantive than most detox supplements can claim.
Sulfation requires sulfur-containing compounds — this is part of why foods like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and garlic genuinely support hormone metabolism. The glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables (especially DIM, or diindolylmethane, and I3C, or indole-3-carbinol) influence how estrogen metabolites are formed and cleared. DIM supplements have a reasonable evidence base for supporting favorable estrogen metabolism, though they're not a magic fix and high doses can sometimes have the opposite effect.
Glutathione conjugation rounds things out. Your liver uses glutathione to neutralize reactive metabolites, so anything that supports glutathione production — N-acetylcysteine (NAC), glycine, selenium — is quietly supporting hormone clearance too.
What the Trendy 'Estrogen Detox' Products Are Actually Selling You
Most commercial estrogen detox products lean heavily on two things: proprietary herb blends and the word 'cleanse.' Some include milk thistle, which genuinely supports liver cell health and has decent research behind it. Some include dandelion root or burdock, which are fine but don't do anything specifically targeted to hormone metabolism.
What they almost never contain is the specific B vitamin forms, adequate DIM dosing, NAC, or calcium-d-glucarate in amounts that would actually move the needle. They're banking on the fact that most consumers don't know the difference between 'supports liver health' (a legal structure/function claim) and 'meaningfully improves estrogen clearance' (something that requires specific nutrients at specific doses).
That's not to say every supplement in this space is useless. It's to say you should know what you're buying — and why.
What Actually Supports Healthy Hormone Clearance Day to Day
Before you reach for any supplement, the dietary basics matter more than most people want to hear. Fiber is huge — it binds estrogen metabolites in the gut and helps carry them out. Women eating high-fiber diets tend to have lower circulating estrogen levels. Cruciferous vegetables several times a week, adequate protein (your liver needs amino acids to run both phases), and enough healthy fats to support bile production — these are the foundation.
From a supplement standpoint, if you want to genuinely support Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver function, a solid B-complex with methylated forms, magnesium glycinate, vitamin C, NAC, and potentially DIM or calcium-d-glucarate are the evidence-leaning options. Milk thistle is a reasonable add-on for general liver support.
And if you're dealing with real hormonal symptoms — heavy periods, PMS that derails your week, perimenopausal shifts — that's a conversation worth having with a practitioner who can actually test your hormone metabolites, not just your estradiol level.
Your liver is doing extraordinarily complex work every day. It doesn't need a cleanse. It needs the right raw materials. Feed it those, and it'll handle the rest.
