You went to your doctor. You got the bloodwork done. TSH? Normal. T4? Normal. Your physician smiled, handed you a printout, and sent you on your way. This isn't in your head. And it's not a mystery, either.
The reality is that standard thyroid panels are a pretty blunt instrument. They tell you whether your thyroid gland is producing hormone — but they don't tell you whether that hormone is actually working inside your cells. That gap between "normal labs" and "feeling totally off" is where a lot of people fall through the cracks of conventional medicine.
The Conversion Problem Nobody Talks About
Here's the short version of thyroid biology: your thyroid gland mostly produces T4, which is essentially a storage form of thyroid hormone. For your body to actually use it, T4 has to be converted into T3 — the active form that regulates metabolism, body temperature, hair growth, and a dozen other things you care about.

If you're supplementing, selenomethionine tends to be better absorbed than other forms, and most functional practitioners suggest staying in the 100–200 mcg range for general support.
Iron: The Overlooked Hair and Thyroid Double-Hitter
Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional shortfalls in American women — and it's also one of the most underdiagnosed contributors to both thyroid dysfunction and hair loss.
Here's why it matters for your thyroid: an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase (TPO) needs iron to synthesize thyroid hormone in the first place. Low iron, lower hormone production. Meanwhile, hair follicles are among the most metabolically active tissues in the body, and they're exquisitely sensitive to iron levels. A "normal" lab result is a starting point, not an ending point. If your body is telling you something is wrong — through hair loss, cold intolerance, fatigue, or brain fog — that signal deserves to be taken seriously, even if a standard panel doesn't explain it.
